Phillies Notes | Drabek done for a year with injury
SAN DIEGO - The Phillies suffered a major blow yesterday, but they say they don't think it's fatal. They announced that righthander Kyle Drabek, the team's No. 1 draft pick in 2006 and the organization's No. 2 prospect according to Baseball America, will undergo Tommy John surgery on his right elbow Wednesday in New York. He will miss about a year, but the Phillies are optimistic he will make a complete recovery.   More...   [Top]

Three from TWHS head to Sam Houston
Three former The Woodlands High School baseball players, all part of their 2006 5-A Championship team, are signed to become Sam Houston State Bearkats this fall. Right-handed pitcher Jerad Stevens, shortstop Ryan Mooney, and third basemen Tim Schneider have all signed their letters of intent to play for Coach Mark Johnson at Sam Houston State University.   More...   [Top]

All-state baseball team announced
Nine Montgomery County high school standouts, including six from The Woodlands, earned their way onto the 2007 Texas Sports Writer's Association All-State Baseball Teams. The Woodlands, which made it to the regional quarterfinals, has a pair of third-team all- state players in catcher Mickey Armstrong (.355) and outfielder Brett Eibner (.417, 6 HRs). Eibner was the fourth-round pick of the Houston Astros as a pitching prospect, while Armstrong is headed to Texas Tech on a baseball scholarship.   More...   [Top]

Owls Ousted From CWS
Following the 6-1 loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels on Wednesday, the Rice Owls baseball team knew it was in a familiar situation. The Owls won the first two games of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., in 2006 before dropping the next two. This time would be different. Owls struggle, now face elimination
The 6-1 loss the Rice baseball team suffered to North Carolina on Wednesday at Rosenblatt Stadium may have some thinking déjà vu. Owls ready to soar
They say that most owls spend afternoons being quiet and unemphatic, and that's just how the Rice Owls baseball team played Wednesday, in their 6-1 loss to North Carolina, at the College World Series. Recent The Woodlands High School graduate Tim Schneider was one of the leading hitters in the greater Houston area this spring. Big time: Hometown standouts make splash in draft
It might not have gone exactly according to plan, but two The Woodlands High School baseball stars were selected in the recent Major League Baseball draft. TWHS standout picked by Astros in fourth round
Recent The Woodlands High School graduate Brett Eibner moved to Texas two years ago and made an impact on two powerful Highlander varsity baseball teams. A few years down the road, he could be making an impact on another Texas team - the Houston Astros. Eibner, a member of the 2006 TWHS 5A state and national champion squad and also the state-ranked 2007 team, was selected in the fourth round of the pro baseball draft on Thursday by the Astros.   More...   [Top]

Highlanders dominate All-District team
The Woodlands High School placed 12 players on the 15-5A first and second All-District baseball teams. Senior third baseman Tim Schneider was voted the district's Most Valuable Player. "As a coaching staff, we don't vote on our own kids," Woodlands Coach Ron Eastman said. "It was hard for us to pick an MVP candidate. The Woodlands title defense falls short
All good things come to an end and Saturday afternoon the Woodlands Highlanders finally lost a baseball playoff series. Not since 2005 have the Highlanders be been eliminated from the post season, but it had to happen sooner or later. After winning the whole enchilada last season, The Woodlands made a gallant effort to win back-to-back state championships, but after forcing a deciding game- three, the Georgetown Eagles ended the great Highlander run by defeating them, 7-3.   More...   [Top]

Round rocked: Highlanders slay Dragons, prepare for Eagles
The Woodlands High School baseball team advanced to the third round of the state playoffs with an 8-4 win over Round Rock in the deciding third game of the Area round series at A&M Consolidated Saturday afternoon. The win sends The Woodlands into a third round series with Georgetown who beat Lufkin in two games. The Highlanders will play the Eagles today at 7:30 p.m. at Bryan High School's field. The teams will play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at A&M Consolidated High School. If a third game is necessary, it will be played at 1 p.m. Saturday at A&M Consolidated.   More...   [Top]

Highlanders hunt Eagles
The Woodlands Highlanders have made a habit of feasting off District 14-5A opponents in recent years and this week they will face the district's fourth place team, Georgetown High School, for the Regional quarterfinals in the state playoffs. Over the past two seasons, TWHS (30-4) has posted a 13-1 playoff record and the lone loss came last week at the hands of Round Rock, another District 14- 5A school. Highlanders win 5A state championship
ROUND ROCK - The Woodlands baseball team has been crowned with a bevy of honors during its 2006 season: District champs, top team in Texas and top team in the nation, to name a few. Highlanders win title from defending state champs
The Highlanders marched into the Astros High School Classic as contenders, but walked out champions on Saturday night as The Woodlands topped defending state champion Kingwood 9-1 at Minute Maid Park. Pitcher Brett Eibner was on the mound and left a dominating impression for only having pitched four innings. Walk-off HR sends TWHS past Bellaire at Minute Maid
Derek Smith's dramatic two-run walk-off home run into the Crawford Boxes in the bottom of the seventh inning gave No. 1 state-ranked The Woodlands High School varsity baseball team a scintillating 4-2 victory over Bellaire in the opening round of the Astros High School Classic at Minute Maid Park on Thursday afternoon. Former TWHS baseball coach takes top position at Lamar
A familiar face to Montgomery County baseball fans has decided to rejoin the high school coaching ranks five years after bringing a state crown to The Woodlands. Drabek Named to All-American Game
Named one of the top high school baseball players in the nation before his junior season, The Woodlands High School's Kyle Drabek is living up to the hype as the Highlander senior-to-be was named on Thursday to the 2005 Aflac All- American High School Baseball Classic roster. Drabek, Heard use talents to earn top honors
Sharing the County Player of the Year honors are a pair of juniors who were triple threats for their respective teams by excelling on the mound, at the plate and in the field - Montgomery's Michael Heard and The Woodlands' Kyle Drabek. Drabek made an impact on the Highlanders' trip to the regional semifinals in a variety of ways. Cairo, Egypt -- Will Sims, former sophomore team player moved to Cairo, Egypt in 2004 after his first TWHS season. Moving to the Middle East was a bit disconcerting. However, one bright spot was the Cairo American College's baseball program. From Roger Clemens to Greg Maddux to Randy Johnson, Minute Maid Park has had its share of Cy Young Award winners grace its mound. But on Friday the Astros' home field had for the first time two sons of Cy Young winners toeing the rubber as The Woodlands and Kyle Drabek faced off with Houston Memorial and Koby Clemens in a playoff warm-up game. THE WOODLANDS - Kyle Walker extended his innings of no-hit baseball to 22 1/3 innings with his third consecutive no-hitter in district play with Saturday's 13-0 victory at home against Conroe. Walker has now no-hit Collins, Forest and Conroe in succession. The No. 1 state-ranked and No. 4 nationally ranked The Woodlands High School varsity baseball team avenged a first-round league loss to Klein, hammering the Bearkats 15-0 in run-rule fashion at Scotland Yard on Tuesday night. The No. 1 state-ranked baseball team from The Woodlands pounded out twelve hits, including a pair of home runs, to defeat Bellaire 13-5 on Saturday afternoon at Scotland Yard. Highlanders' run comes to an end
After dropping a heartbreaking loss in their series opener against Plano East, The Woodlands Highlanders bounced back to capture game two 4-2, only to fall short in the rubber game by a final score of 7-6, ending their dominating season two steps short of the state tourney in Austin. One week after dominating the nation's top ranked baseball team, The Woodlands High School squad came back to earth on Friday evening dropping a heartbreaking loss to the Plano East Panthers by the score of 3-2 in the game one of the best-of-three Region II-5A semifinal series at Waco I.S.D.'s Veterans Field. A big season-opening battle lived up to its billing on Monday night at Scotland Yard, with No. 5 preseason area-ranked The Woodlands losing a tough 2-0 decision to No. 7 Clements in a pitching duel between a pair of top signees. Highlander right-hander Brad Depoy, a first-team All-Greater Houston selection, took the mound and lived up to his billing, going all seven innings and allowing just two runs, one earned, while striking out eight and walking none and allowing just three hits. The Woodlands High School baseball team's seventh inning rally was snuffed out by the Klein Bearkats as the Highlanders lost 7-4 on Friday night at Scotland Yard. The Highlanders were able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Bearkats would stiffen up and shut them down in the District 15-5A match with Greg Babcock flying out to end the game. The No. 12 area-ranked The Woodlands High School varsity baseball team rallied to overcome a 6-2 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn a 7-6 victory over the No. 10 area-ranked Spring Lions. For the second consecutive year, The Woodlands High School baseball team came into its district opener ranked in the top-10 in the area only to be upset by the Tomball Cougars. Last season the Highlanders lost 13-7 at Tomball after going 6-0 in non-district play. Highlanders rally for tournament win
The Woodlands High School varsity baseball team came back in the bottom of the sixth to win an 11-10 thriller over Clements on Thursday at the Spring Tournament. The Highlanders fell behind early as the Rangers roughed up TWHS starter Zach Cobb. Cobb was relieved in third inning by Brad Depoy after allowing nine runs on nine hits. He's going out on top - for now. In a shocking decision to most Montgomery County baseball fans, The Woodlands High School head varsity baseball coach Mike McGilvray, who helped lead the Highlanders to an unforgettable run to the 5A State Championship this past spring, has resigned his coaching position. TWHS, CHS garner postseason baseball honors
Several Conroe High School baseball players and The Woodlands High School baseball players have been honored for their fine season with all-district selections. The 15-5A all district team was voted on by the coaches of district 15-5A. The coach of the year and most valuable player came for the 5A state champion Highlander squad. And when the weather finally cooperated, The Woodlands High School baseball team stormed past Corpus Christi-Moody by a 3-2 score and were crowned state champions at Disch-Falk Field on Monday afternoon. Highlanders edge Lufkin in 8 innings, move within 1 win of state tourney
COLLEGE STATION - Another nailbiter in the postseason for The Woodlands High School baseball team resulted in another win for the Highlanders. A bases-loaded bloop single over a drawn-in infield by freshman Aaron Cook in the bottom of the eighth inning gave TWHS a 2-1 win over Lufkin in the first game of a best-of-three Region II-5A final at Texas A&M University's Olsen Field. Zach Cobb picked up his seventh win of the year after pitching the eighth inning.
